Lets be honest, no one wants mould in their bathroom. It’s unhygienic and looks bad! However mould is inevitable and happens to everyone’s bathroom. Mould is created in places where there is high humidity, such as in the shower, in the bath, in the sink, in and around corners of your shower and bathtub. Luckily mould is simple to remove and with the correct strategies in place you can reduce the mould build up in your bathroom tremendously. The ideal way to stop mould build-up is controlling the level of your bathroom’s humidity. Mould thrives in humidity, so the hotter and steamier your bathroom is the more mould will invade.
We know mould appears when there are high levels of humidity in your bathroom, but what else?
Majority of us will have a shower with the shower door closed, and as there is no airflow during your shower, the hot steam and moisture gets trapped inside and clings onto the walls, floors and taps allowing for mould to appear.
As grout ages it begins to crack, making it the perfect place for moisture and steam to find its way in between the grout and behind tiles. As paint is a form of food, and darkness is encouragement, you most likely will have mould in your grout if you haven’t had your grout replaced within the past 6 months.
Mould can be found anywhere, under mats, on towels, behind taps, near windows, in the sink and around the toilet, so let’s look at the best way to prevent your bathroom mould.
Humidity and poor ventilation is the main influence over mould. The best way to stop mould is by installing a fan in your bathroom (if you don’t already have one). A fan will create a consistent airflow throughout your bathroom, removing any steam and moisture straight away. Another way to increase airflow is to open your shower door straight after your shower, do not keep it closed. Also don’t forget to open windows for a less expensive alternative. If you do not have a fan and rely on open windows for air ventilation, you may need to invest in a dehumidifier, as windows will not provide sufficient assistance.
After your shower, we recommend removing any excess water straight away. Use a squeegee over the shower wall, bathroom sink, bathtub and taps. This way mould will be unable to identify a place to reside. It’s also a good idea to check and remove any excess water in your bathroom once a week. This way you will be able to ensure there will be no mould in your bathroom. Scrubs and washcloths are the best tools to use to ensure mould does not invade your bathroom.
Clean Your Bathroom Accessories
It’s important to clean your bath, shower and sink, but don’t forget about your towels, mats, shower curtains and hand towels. Throw away any item that has dark spots, as this is a sign of mould invasion. We recommend purchasing absorbent bathroom mats which will prevent water from seeping underneath your mat into your tiles. The main focus is keeping everything dry!
Replacing Bathroom Grout
You should be replacing the grout in your bathroom at least every 6 months, and you should be cleaning your grout once a week to prevent any invasion of mould. By taking these preventative steps, you will thank yourself later when there is no mould in your grout! When replacing your grout, make sure you seal it with a latex penetrating sealer, this way any access mould may have had before, has been closed off.
